complete coverage continues with derek valcourt. he is at the scene. he joins us live, via the phone. >>> there is a lot of tension. obviously, a lot of questions for employees of discovery communications who want to know exactly what is going on inside their building. many people were at work around 1:00 this afternoon, when an announcement came over the loud speaker, telling them to make themselves secure in their office. then a massive e-mail went out, at about 1:20, warning them to lock themselves down in their office. if there was some potential danger in the building. another e-mail went out at about 1:52, trying to explain to employees how they would be able to get out. all of the employees were taken up to the top floor of the 7th, 8th, and 9th floor of the building. and then they were all escorted out a fire escape. right now, police are here on the scene. they are briefing the media. i'll have an update for you in just a few moments. >> derek valcourt, reporting live from the phone. the discovery is a very busy section of silver spring. bruce johnson filed this report a sho

to clarify, because you ted -- did tell us there was a pop sound. do you believe that might have been the actual gun shot from police or the subsequent explosion? >> i think it was a gun shot. that is what it sounded like timmie. i was not entirely tuned in, but it caught my attention. others heard it as well. some folks -- it took place outside. almost immediately afterward there was an increase of attention paid by some security folks downtown business district employees who have radios. one of them heard from a colleague that there was a body on the ground. he described it as a person on the ground. >> what appears to me is whether or not any of the hostages came out with this suspect. >> we don't know anything about that. three hostages, but the police chief said there were no injuries. we don't know whether they stayed in or out, but they were not hit by police fire or anything else the hostages are just fine. i am looking past the camera there is an ambulance coming by may. are they directing it down the road? there is a montgomery county ambulance -- now they are holding it. it

of this. we have to cutback. thank you for joining us everybody. jon: "america live" starts right now. megyn: breaking news on hurricane earl. the category 3 storm is now less than 800 miles from north carolina's coastline. forecasters this hour predicting earl will bring extremely high waves, high surf and rip currents to much of the east coast. expecting new track and strength information from the national hurricane center in less than an hour. right now a hurricane warning is up for parts of north carolina. to give you perspective on how big this storm is check out this picture of earl from outer space. taken by an astronaut on the international space station. look at that, you can see the eye in the center there. that is just stunning. i've team coverage starting with the current conditions from our tp-bgs meteorologist. >> reporter: we have three storms we are watching. there is earl, there is fiona that is bringing winds around 60 miles an hour back to the leeward islands again and that right there potentially becoming gaston later on in the day. that could have impact again for
went on there. >> at this time i was not in view of it so i can't comment on that. >> can you tell us how many shooters there were and was it just one shot? >> i'm sorry. what was the question? >> how many shooters were there? snipers were there? >> i don't know yet. that is still under investigation. >> the suspect in this case was arrested as a result of a protest, i guess, at discovery in february of 2008. as a result of that arrest, he was charged with disorderly conduct. he was convicted and serve ad ten-day sentence for disorderly conduct for the protest he did here. he was taking homeless individuals and paying them sum of money to protest with him at the site of this building. as a condition of this probation in 2008, he was ordered to stay at least 500 feet away from the discovery building. his probation ended two weeks ago. >> david, do you expect to be back open for business tomorrow morning? >> we'll be communicating with employees later tonight. it is an active crime scene. >> [ inaudible ]. >> at this time we need to get back to the command post. we thank you very much.
